One Dead, 8 Seriously Injured In 20-Vehicle Collision
JUAREZ — One personwas killedand another eightwere injured as a result of a 20 vehicle collision shortly after2 a.m.Monday, Juarez police confirmed.
Officials said many of the drivers involved in the accident on Mexico’sHighway 40lost control of their vehicles because of low visibility in the highway, which connects Juarez toMexico City. They are blaming the low-visibility issues to heavy winds that spread sand and dirt throughout the air.
Investigators said the massive collision resulted from a fatal, three-vehicle collision.
A Nissan Sentra rear-ended a Mercedez Benz on the highway, officials said. A passenger in the Nissan immediately got out of the car to talk to the driver of the Mercedez Benz, witnesses said. At that point, a Chevy Suburban crashed into the Nissan Sentra and ran over the woman in the process, investigators said.
Officials said the fatal accident started a sequence of collisions after more vehicles travelling south failed to brake on time to avoid the accident. The resulting collisions seriously injured eight more individuals. Five Red Cross ambulancescame outand took the injured to nearby hospitals.
