EL PASO – Police released the name of the man they arrested in connection with the city’s latest homicide.
Javier Silva, 23, is in the El Paso CountyDetention Centercharged with murder.
Police saidSilva killed a woman then sether bodyon fire.
Fire crewsmade the grisly discovery on a residential street near Loop 375 between Montwood and Vista del Sol.
Officials said crews werecalled out to fight a brush fire in a retention pond but when they got there they quickly discovered this call would be a much more gruesome one.
“When firefighters got to the scene they originally thought it was some sort of mannequin but they realized after (extinguishing the fire) that it was a human body,” said Lt. Mario Hernandez, spokesman for the El Paso Fire Department.
The woman’s body was found along Bob Hope Drive. The area is a place where people go to dump old sofas and scrawl graffiti.
Charred brush still remains along the edge of the retention pond where the body was burned.
Police said the woman was killed elsewhere but brought to this pond, dumped, and set on fire. They think it was an attempt to cover up evidence.
“There’s a lot of stuff we can do forensically to recover evidence even after a body has been burned,” said Ofc. Chris Mears, spokesman for the El Paso Police Department.
