Silver City Area Seeing Rise In Calls About Rabid Foxes

SILVER CITY, N.M. (AP) – Authorities in the Silver City area are getting more calls about people spotting foxes.

There have been five confirmed cases of rabies in foxes in the Silver City area this year, and four people in the region have been bitten by foxes since spring.

Most of the calls to the state Department of Game and Fish have come from the Little Walnut area of Grant County, where a man working on his house was bitten by a fox during the Memorial Day weekend. That fox tested positive for rabies.

Rabid animals might show no fear of people and may seem friendly or become aggressive.

Since rabies can be prevented but not cured, the state Department of Health urges people to vaccinate pets and livestock.
