Are Tomatoes Really Cause Of Salmonella Outbreak?

SANTA FE (AP) – New Mexico has reported 92 salmonella cases in a widespread outbreak that has been blamed on tomatoes.

But as the number of cases climbs, the federal government is checking whether tainted tomatoes really are to blame.

It’s possible the problem is another ingredient or a warehouse that’s contaminating newly harvested tomatoes.

The outbreak has made 810 people ill around the country. Federal health officials say the widening outbreak means whatever is making people sick could still be on the market.

The Food and Drug Administration says tomatoes remain the top suspect and advice on which the ones to avoid hasn’t changed.

But the FDA’s food safety chief says it’s possible tomatoes harvested in states considered safe could be picking up salmonella germs in packing sheds, warehouses or other facilities.
