‘Explosion’ Of Train Tank Car Turns Out To Be Harmless
EL PASO COUNTY, Texas — El Paso County Sheriff’s deputies said that an apparent explosion Monday morning from a train’s tank cars posed no danger to the public.
About 10:19 a.m., El Paso and West Valley firefighters and the sheriff’s office haz-mat unit and sheriff’s deputies responded to the 7800 block of Doniphan after calls that one of the train’s tank cars had “exploded” and was leaking a white liquid.
After investigation, it was determined that no explosion had occurred and the liquid was harmless refrigerated liquid carbon dioxide. Apparently the “explosion” was actually the tank releasing excess pressure under normal procedures, which emitted loud popping sounds, officials said.
