Mexico Violence Has Many Feeling The Fear In Fabens
by ABC-7 Reporter Martin Bartlett
FABENS, Texas- Nerves are clearly frayed in the small El Paso County farming town of Fabens after a long string of brutal and bloody executions and beheadings across the border in the nearby communities of Guadalupe and Caseta.
“It’s the type of thing that should only happening in the Old West movies,” said Gloria Gonzalez who lives between Fabens and Caseta on the U.S. side of the border. “It’s certainly not the type of thing that should happen here today.”
Gonzalez was the only person we found who was willing to share her opinions on camera — everybody else said it didn’t seem like a good idea because of the violence.
“I’m laying low,” said one man in Fabens who wouldn’t give his name. “This is the drug capital of the world.”
While there haven’t been any of the especially brutal killings in rural El Paso County, many people expressed fear that the violence could spread.
“It’s scary because they’re our neighbors and that could actually happen to us,” Gonzalez said.
More to the point, she said since Fabens is a cross-border community, it’s not immune to violence even when it happens across the border.
