Thursday, February 5th Was National Weatherperson’s Day.

It’s not an official holiday and few people seem to know it even exists.

We took a look at a card shop on El Paso’s West side and could not find any cards celebrating this particular day.

Even some meteorologists at the National Weather Service Office in Santa Teresa were unaware of National Weatherperson’s Day, but that was probably because they were hard at work putting the forecast together.

This day celebrates the birth of John Jeffries in 1744, who was one of the first weather observers in the United States.

And with Doppler Radar, satellites, and computer models, it’s safe to say we’ve come a long way in forecasting the weather since the 18th century.

The National Weather Service and television stations like ABC-7 have the latest technology when it comes to forecasting.

That technology will continue to improve in the future so that both organizations can continue to work together to bring the general public more accurate forecasts and timely weather warnings.

So for one day we celebrate those dedicated to the art of weather forecasting, even if there aren’t any greeting cards available.
