Health Problems May Have Caused I-10 Rollover, Family Says
EL PASO, Texas — Family members of a woman who died after the SUV she was driving rolled over on I-10 near Anthony say that health problems may have been to blame for the wreck.
Fifty-five-year-old Blanca Melendez died last Thursday. Melendez was the great-aunt to 8-year-old Karina Reyes, a passenger in the SUV who died shortly after the wreck. Four other grandchildren were in the SUV as well.
New Mexico state police initially said that Melendez was distracted as she was trying to open a water bottle for one of the children, but her family said that Melendez was feeling nauseated and dizzy that day.
Her daughter Brenda Ulloa said the children riding with her were very special to her: “She absolutely loved her grandkids and her niece. They were her world.”
Melendez’s daughters said they donated their mother’s organs.
An autopsy is now underway, and New Mexico state police continue to investigate the crash.
