5 Children Evacuated During Westside House Fire

EL PASO, Texas — A 13-year-old girl was babysitting four younger children when a fire broke out at a West El Paso home, El Paso fire officials said.

The blaze started inside a bedroom at the 6300 block of Franklin Gate about 9:15 a.m. Monday. Fire investigators said they arrived at the home and found four smaller children inside. They were pulled out immediately.

However, the 13-year-old was upstairs where the fire started and it took a few minutes to rescue her. She was taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

Investigators said the caretakers were at work and the girl was watching the other children. All five children are expected to be fine. They are now with their grandparents.

Fire investigators are still determining what started the fire. They estimate the damage at $2,000.
