EL PASO –City Representative Emma Acosta defeated Alexandro Lozano, a former city representative, in the heated race for District 3.

The latest figures show Acosta with 2,817 votes to Lozano’s 1,165. That puts Acosta at 71% to Lozano’s 29%.

Acosta won a special election in 2008 for the District 3 seat after Lozano stepped down.

The race between the two candidates quickly escalated into a ethics crusade that ended with Acosta filing ethics complaints against Lozano and County Judge Anthony Cobos.

“Now we can address the issues before us,” said Acosta, who added she never had a doubt about retaining her seat. “I had God on my side … It was a tough campaign, but we did it. We are going to make El Paso a greater place to live in.”

Acosta said she plans to work to make economic development grow in El Paso and to make the Medical Center of the Americas a reality.
