Cook Wins Re-Election; Gets More Than 60% Of The Vote

EL PASO — Mayor John Cook fended off a list of challengers and received more than 61% of the vote to secure his re-election.

His main challenger, Gus Haddad, received a total of 8,474 votes for 28% of the vote. That was not enough to force Cook into a run-off election as the incumbent tallied a total of 18,727 votes for a 61% share.

“This was a vote of confidence for the progressives on city council. Progressives is notbad word. El Paso is progressing,” Cook said.

Cook told ABC-7 he dedicated his win to his mother, who recently passed away. “Mom, this one is for you. I know you are up there and asked God to get involved in my campaign.”

In other city races, City Representative Susie Byrd retained her District 2 seat with a total of 1,972 votes for a 59% of the share. Her closest challenger, Yamil Chaheine, only received 29% of the vote with tally of 961 votes.

In the race for the District 7, Steve Ortega secured his re-election with a tally of 1,949 votes for a 60% share of the vote. His closest challenger, Trini Munoz, tallied 811 votes for a 25% share.
