CBP Seizes 2,300 Pounds Of Pot During Holiday Weekend
EL PASO — Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers working at area ports of entry seized more than2,300 pounds of pot as a result of adozen drug seizures during Memorial Day weekend, according to agency officials.
The largest seizure occurred at the Bridge of the Americas commercial cargo lot Friday afternoon. That’s where CBP officers seized more than 1,500 pounds of pot in a single incident.
Officials said a Kenworth box truck entered the port transporting a shipment of plastic waste. CBP officers selected the truck for an intensive exam and directed the driver to the truck x-ray system, officials said.The x-ray device then detected an anomaly in the appearance of the shipment consistent with hidden contraband, officials added.
A drug-sniffing dog then searched the shipment and alert officers to thepresence of drugs. CBP officers searched the plastic scrap and found more than 4,100 bundles of pot.
No arrests have been made and the investigation is continuing.
