Dave Speelman: How Does August Look?

by ABC-7 StormTRACKMeteorologist Dave Speelman

The newest model prediction is out for the month of August and it doesn’t look that great for rain. August is typically our wettest month, averaging 1.75″.

Just a couple of months ago, the models were anticipating a great monsoon. June started off great and then we hit a brick wall in July. We only recorded .50″ for the month (our third wettest typically) when we average 1.49″.

Anyway, here is the latest computer model outlook for rain and temperatures for this new month.

Temperatures for August (top graphic) are expected to be around normal for El Paso and Las Cruces while above normal highs are expected to continue to for a good part of east and central Texas. Above normal temperatures are also anticipated for the southwest, west and northwest. Below normal temperatures expected for the Midwest and Great Lakes.

Rainfall for August (bottom graphic) shows rainfall expected in El Paso and Las Cruces will be about 50-50. The greatest rainfall opportunity will be in eastern Colorado , much of Kansas and up to southwestern Nebraska. Below normal rainfall is expected in south Texas, Louisiana and southern Mississippi.
