Man Killed In Officer-Involved Shooting In Central EP
EL PASO, Texas — Police identified the man shot and killed by two police officers as Javier Francisco Guerrero, 27, of the 3400 block of Hamilton.
Police officials said Guerrero allegedly threatened two police officers with a knife. The officers were identified as Martin Cordova and John Schneider, both seven-year veterans of the police department. They will be placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
The two officers, who were inplain-clothes, were conducting an investigation in the areawhen they spottedGuerrero “acting suspiciously” and armed with two knifes in front of the Amigo Mart grocery store, which is locatednear the intersection of Copia and Fort Blvd.
Officials said the officers approachedGuerrero and identified themselves. He responded by running away, they added. When the officers caught up to Guerrero, he allegedly pulled out a knife, forcing the officers to shoot and kill him, said investigators.
Guerrero’s brother, Miguel, told ABC-7 his brother had warrants and had told him he would not give up to police officers without a fight if and when they showed up for him.
That hypothetical situation became a reality for Guerrero Thursday morning.
“He came over here with my dad to the store. I don’t know if the cops were following somebody but he just got out of the van and started running. And I guess that is when they shot him,” Miguel Guerrero said.
Guerrerowas taken to William Beaumont Army Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
