Comic Character Helps Spread H1N1 Prevention
EL PASO, TX — The Pan American Health Organization is producing 30 second commercials featuring a well-known comic book character to get the word out about staying healthy and free from the H1N1 virus.
“Monica’s Gang” can be seen washing their hands, covering their mouth when they sneeze and cough, and acting out other preventative measures while a Spanish-speaking male announcer talks about how to stop the spread of germs.
It is just one measure used by the Pan American Health Organization, a regional office of the World Health Organization, to make sure residents along the U.S./Mexico border are aware of how to prevent the swine flu from spreading.
“It’s important that every single individual captures as much information as possible so everyone has his own criteria and interpretation on how to use it,” said Dr. Luis Castellanos, an epidemiologist with the Pan American Health Organization.
Dr. Castellanos joins the numerous physicians and experts across the country in his opinion that the H1N1 vaccine is safe and will prevent more illnesses than it causes.
That vaccine will not be available in the city’s public and private clinics and doctor’s offices for at least the next two weeks.
