Rick Cabrera

Being named the successor to a broadcasting legend was definitely NOT on Rick’s bucket list, but he realizes he’s also been given the opportunity of a lifetime. Rick began anchoring ABC-7 @ 5, 6, & 10 following the retirement of longtime anchor Gary Warner in May of 2008. Not bad for a guy that started his career at ABC-7 as a weekend sports anchor. Rick considers it an honor to take over for Gary and sit alongside another top notch and talented anchor in Estela Casas.

Rick actually kicked off his broadcast career as a sports producer at KPHO-TV in Phoenix. After nearly five years in The Valley of the Sun, Rick was hired by KVIA in 1999. After nine months on the job he was named Sports Director.

In the Spring of 2005 he began co-anchoring ABC-7 @ 4 while maintaining his sports anchoring duties. Then in June of 2006 he received an offer he couldn’t refuse and began co-anchoring El Paso’s most watched and highest rated morning show, Good Morning El Paso, and ABC-7 @ Noon.

Rick is the youngest of three children and even though his family was living in San Jose (CA), he was born in Del Rio (TX) because his mother wanted him to be a “Texan”. His family eventually moved to Round Rock (TX) when Rick was in the 8th grade. He also spent a year with his father in Kingsville (TX.) before graduating from Round Rock High School. Rick attended the University of Texas, where he earned a B.A. in broadcast journalism.

Despite making the switch to news, Rick can talk sports with the best of them. In fact, nowadays, when he’s not playing catch with his son Andrew or teaching his daughter Madynthe in’s and out’s of pass interference, he’s usually plopped down on his couch watching his favorite teams, the Dallas Cowboys, the Texas Longhorns, and the LA Dodgers.
