Stanford Fans Go Tourist Shopping In New Mexico

By ABC-7 Reporter Jill Galus

La Mesa, New Mexico – Pecans, pecans, more pecans, and Cardinal red.

Countdown to kickoff at the Brut Sun Bowl is on!

Fans from both schools are in town, and acquainting themselves with the Borderland.

“Go Stanford!,” children shouted.

You can taste the pecans just driving past Stahmann’s. And that is exactly why Stanford fans say, they just had to check it out.

A tour bus full of Stanford family and friends rolled up to the local landmark.

“We’ve had some real good hospitality here,” Don Puckett said, a Stanford fan who traveled all the way from Tennessee for the game. “Very friendly people everywhere I’ve been so we’re enjoying it.”

A short stop in La Mesa on their way traveling back to El Paso, satisfying their hunger now less than 48 hours before game time.

Even on an unusually snow, chilly day in Southern New Mexico, there were plenty of frosty cones to go around. And no one walked out of the nut store empty handed for the ride back.

The team of tourists from Palo Alto, California united by their love for football.

The group says, they even decided to put the game aside and invite Oklahoma fans to join this tour. But, they say, not a single one showed up for the nutty fun. No problem, they had a good time anyway.

“I got to see super cool historic stuff,” a tourist said.

“I thought it was in the middle of nowhere, I thought – awesome, the desert for like five days,” Clare Gleson said, a Stanford fan. “But it’s actually been really fun, I got to meet a lot of really cool people so it’s been enjoyable.”

The group also spent some time in Old Mesilla.
