Live WWII-Era Bomb Found in Desert; Detonated By Fort Bliss Personnel

On April 13, Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Deputies Border Security and Intelligence Unit discovered in the desert area about 20 miles south of Las Cruces, what appeared to be a bomb.

EOD from Fort Bliss was called to the scene and identified the bomb as being a WWII era bomb.

EOD believes the bomb may have fallen from an aircraft more than 60 years ago. The bomb was found to be still “live.”

The bomb was destroyed in place and left an approximately three foot by six foot crater, sending up a 200 foot plume of smoke, when detonated.
