Update: 2 Teens Hit By Driver On Doniphan; 1 Now In Coma
It will be another night of recovery for two teens hit by a car in Canutillo. ABC-7 can tell you one is in stable condition – but the other is in coma.
The two 14-year-olds were hit while walking across Doniphan.
“I could not believe it. It was like in, like a movie scene,” said 16-year-old Javier Alvarez. He’s still shocked he witnessed the crash.
Alvarez said he was standing outside the shop when he saw the two girls standing right in front of the sheet metal shop, trying to cross Doniphan. They crossed, then the said he saw a white car slam into them. He told ABC-7 he still can’t believe what he saw happen.
“One girl got up and ran over here to the sidewalk. And then the other one just stayed right there. She didn’t move at all.” Alvarez explained.
Authorities said they have no idea why the two teens walked into the street. “However, there’s no excuse for the driver. He shouldn’t have been behind the wheel,” explained Deputy Jesse Tovar, spokesman for the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
That driver is 23-year-old Alfredo Alvarado. He told investigators he had been drinking earlier in the day, but a breathalyzer showed him below the legal limit.
Alvarado after was arrested by El Paso police just last month on a charge of driving while intoxicated.
Problem is, Alvarado doesn’t even have a driver’s license. He does have nearly 20 suspensions attached to his Texas ID card.
Despite those offenses, deputies say they didn’t arrest Alvarado because they’re waiting for the District Attorney’s Office to review the case. “We know where he’s at in the event that the case is accepted, we’ll go ahead and work up that warrant and we’ll give him an opportunity to turn himself in or we’ll go pick him up,” said Tovar.
Meanwhile, Alvarez explained, “The best thing to do is cross over there at the intersection where there’s lights and everything.”
Sheriff’s investigators say speed is not a factor in the crash. Their investigation continues.
