Las Cruces Woman Allegedly Leaves Baby In Car After Night Of Partying
A Las Cruces woman was arrested Wednesday after she passed out from a night of partying and allegedly left her 8-month-old son unattended in a vehicle, according to Las Cruces Police.
Shawntae Raydiance Wiley, 21, of the 300 block of east Amador Avenue, has been charged with one count of negligent child abuse. Wiley was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $5,000.
Las Cruces Police detectives learned that the child’s grandmother was leaving her residence at around 9 a.m. Wednesday when she noticed the driver’s side door to Wiley’s vehicle open. The grandmother went to close the door and found Wiley’s 8-month-old son unattended inside the vehicle.
The grandmother attempted to wake Wiley, who was asleep inside the home, but was unable to immediately do so. The grandmother then called the state’s Children, Youth and Families Department who sent an investigator to the residence.
It is believed the child was left unattended in the vehicle for up to two hours but did not appear to be injured, police officials said.
Wiley told investigators that she was out all night partying and drinking. She did not wake up until around 1 p.m. Wednesday at which point she learned that she had left her son in the vehicle.
CYFD placed the child into the temporary custody of one of Wiley’s relatives.
