El Pasoans Ride Sun Metro To Dump The Pump

Sun Metro joined public transportation systems nationwide to participate in the 5th annual National Dump the Pump Day on Thursday.

Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), the 2010 National Dump the Pump Day is a day that encourages people to ride public transportation to save money, protect the environment, reduce our dependence on foreign oil and improve our quality of life.

El Pasoans who wanted the free ride had to log onto Sun Metro’s Website to download and print a voucher. The reason for having people print the voucher was to expose people to the Internet so they could learn about the Internet, Sun Metro spokeswoman Laura Cruz-Acosta said.

“In this economic climate, saving money is on everyone’s minds and public transportation is the quickest way to beat high gas prices,” said Jay Banasiak, Sun Metro director. “That’s why we’re asking all El Pasoans to join us by dumping the pump on Thursday, June 17.”

According to the latest APTA Transit Savings Report, individuals in a two person household can save an average of more than $9,000 annually by downsizing to one car.

An average of 79 percent of El Pasoans drive to work alone and only 11 percent carpool to work, according to a 2005-07 U.S. Census survey and a recent study by the Brookings Institution.
