Las Cruces Ready To Fix Stinky Sewage Plant

Las Cruces city officials are planning to relocate a composting operation at the wastewater treatment plant.

The effort should reduce complaints about a strong smell near the plant.

The composting operation takes semi-wet sludge – the organic matter screened from wastewater – and preps it for disposal. The process was identified by an engineering firm, which was hired to study the odor problem, as a key source of the stench.

City water resources administrator Gilbert Morales says the composting operation will be moved from the treatment plant to a city-owned property west of Las Cruces. He says the relocation should be complete by the end of June or mid-July. — Information from: Las Cruces Sun-News, http://www.lcsun-news.com
