Guitarist On Marty Robbins’ ‘El Paso’ Has Died

Fred Carter Jr., the Nashville session musician who played on songs such as Marty Robbins’ “El Paso,” Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Boxer” and Bob Dylan’s “Lay Lady Lay,” died July 17, according to an obituary on CMT.com.

He was 76.

Carter’s early career included working with with Roy Orbison, Ronnie Hawkins, Dale Hawkins and Conway Twitty.

According to his CMT.com obituary, Carter was an in-demand studio musician in the 1960s and 1970s. He usually played guitar in the sessions, but also was known to play bass.

Carter is the father of country artist Deana Carter.
