Borderland Band Director Remembered

For years, two borderland teachers touched the lives of thousands of students — inspiring many to pursue their musical dreams.

Earlier this week, their lives were cut short.

Susan Terrazas, 52, spent three decades with the Ysleta Independent School District. She retired as a band director at Vista Hills Elementary School in 2009.

Her family said she died of kidney failure on Tuesday.

Another band director died that day. Aaron Works was the band director at El Paso High School for three years.

Thursday night friends, loved ones, current and former students gathered at the school’s marble steps to say goodbye.

It was a very emotional memorial service for Works who was only 52-years-old.

Many described Works as funny, but serious. A man who loved his students and had a passion for music. Many also fondly remembered his bright orange shirt.

According to El Paso Independent School District officials, Works died of natural causes on Tuesday.

Officials with the Clint Independent School District say Works was a band director at Clint High School for one year before going to El Paso High School. Those who knew him say he left great memories and will never be forgotten.

Details for Aaron Works’ Funeral service have not been finalized, but it is tentatively scheduled for next week.

A memorial service for Susan Terrazas will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, July 23 at Cielo Vista Church on Lee Trevino Drive and Montana Avenue.
