Rogue Campaign Promoting Trolley System

It seems someone is eager for El Paso to bring back the old electric streetcars.

Posters promoting a transnational trolley system have been seen plastered on a vacant building on the west side and the former El Paso Saddleblanket downtown.

The posters, which are professionally printed, are black and white with a man dressed as an old-fashioned bus driver.

“Let us take you home on either side of the border,” one poster states. Another one has the line, “Here to make the border safe again.”

El Paso officials have been talking about bringing back the trolley system for several years, but nothing has been finalized.

City Representative Steve Ortega tells ABC-7 the city is not behind the campaign promoting the trolley, but that he was contacted by someone he believes made the posters.

“I met with a gentleman who’s an El Pasoan living in New York City, and he had some questions about the trolley proposal,” Rep. Ortega said. “He also told me he was going to be starting this campaign.”

Ortega is not sure if the campaign will positively or negatively impact the city’s research on the trolley system, or El Pasoans’ view of the plan. “I don’t know enough about it,” he added.

While the posters say the trolley is “coming in Fall 2015,” Representative Ortega points out the staff looking into the feasibility of the trolley won’t have any numbers or data on that for another few weeks.
