Cost To Ride Sun Metro Buses Increases

El Paso City Council has accepted Sun Metro’s fare hikes, with the exception of the lift fare, which is the service that transports residents who can’t drive and takes them to doctors and other necessary appointments.

The regular full fare will go from $1.25 to $1.50, the student fee from .75 to $1.00, the active military fee from .75 to $1.50 and the standard monthly fee will go from $40.00 to $48.00.

The senior and disabled fare will stay the same at 30 cents, and transfer fees will now be free, instead of the prior 25 cents.

Sun Metro wanted to increase the lift fare from $2.50 to $3, but after hearing from several people with disabilities, City Council voted not to increase that fare.

Sun Metro spokeswoman Laura Cruz-Acosta said the agency needs the money for the proposed bus rapid transit system and maintenance improvement they’ve made in the last few years, including four new transfer centers. She said the extra fare revenue will go toward additional costs, like utilities and janitorial services.
