Lack Of Funds Leaves Wife With Husband’s Body In Home
Wife, now widow, Darlene Hammonds, said the family couldn?t afford to pay for an ambulance to pick up the body of her husband, Frank Hammonds, 82.
“I get Social Security, $400 every month, so that’s not gonna pay for a lot” said Darlene.
The Army vet and grandfather died early Friday morning in the Hammonds? home.
?It’s just heartbreaking to think that he has to lay in there all this time and not one hospital or ambulance wants to take him without cash” said Darlene.
Hammonds? granddaughter, Christoll Millard, was frustrated with the situation.
“No one wants to do anything to help pick him up or nothing” said Millard.
The Dona Ana County Sheriffs Office said transportation of dead bodies is not the county?s responsibility.
The Hammonds said Saturday morning that a funeral home donated the transportation to take the body to the mortuary.
