Las Cruces Woman Faces DWI, Child Abuse Charges

A Las Cruces woman involved in a minor automobile crash on Sunday faces charges of driving while intoxicated and child abuse because her two children were in the vehicle, according to Las Cruces Police officials

Norma Yvette Hernandez, 31, is charged with one count of driving while intoxicated and two counts of negligent child abuse. Hernandez also faces misdemeanor charges of reckless driving, failure to stop and failure to use a seat belt.

Shortly after 7 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 5, Las Cruces Police responded to the intersection of Dunn Drive and Aldrich Road where a 1996 Toyota Camry crashed into a fence. Officers learned that Hernandez was the driver of the vehicle and apparently ran a stop sign, failed to negotiate a turn and crashing into the fence.

According to officers, Hernandez was noticeably intoxicated and failed a sobriety test. Hernandez received relatively minor injuries to her face as a result of the crash. Her two children, ages 2 and 8, did not appear to be injured.

Hernandez was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $22,500.
