Ruidoso Downs Racetrack Considering A Move Based On City Tax Hike Proposal

The historic All American Futurity horse race may not have much of a future in Lincoln County.

The Ruidoso Downs Racetrack and Casino hosts the race every Labor Day.

Vice President Bruce Rimbo told ABC-7 the company is considering a relocation pending the outcome of a proposed tax hike that would benefit Ruidoso Downs.

Rimbo said they would love to stay in the city, but must take their current financial situation into account.

“Right now the losses are running a million plus a year. I just wrote a check putting money into this place to keep it going and we can’t do that forever,” he said.

Taxpayers could soon be stepping in to make up the difference. Voters were sent ballots last week regarding a proposed increase of less than one cent on goods and services in Ruidoso. Voters’ signed ballots are due by Sept. 21.

“The potential is very real to move if it doesn’t pass,” said Rimbo. “The race itself will go with us wherever we go,” he added.

Supporters of the tax hike told ABC-7 the racetrack generates jobs for thousands and causes a trickle down effect in the community. “The cost to the individual is going to be minor compared to what the racetrack brings in,” said Lily Rodgers. She moved to Ruidoso from Arizona specifically for the racetrack.

ABC-7 spoke to one local businessowner who disagreed with the measure. “Everyone in the community is having a hard time, not just the track,” he said. The man, who works at a pottery shop, did not want to be identified. “Taxes do affect my business. If I sell something and people check the gross receipts, they say ‘Wow! How high are your taxes?'” he said.

The races will stay in Ruidoso for at least another year. Three other New Mexico cities have already expressed interest in the company should it decide to move, however. Almogrodo, Clovis, and Las Cruces are in the running for a possible Ruidoso Downs Relocation.
