National Guard Releases More Information on El Paso Soldier Shot to Death In Jurez
The Texas National Guard confirmed the name of the El Paso soldier shot to death Wednesday in a colonia of south Jurez.
PFC Jose Gil Hernandez, 22, was a Fire Direction Sensor Specialist assigned to Headquarters Battery 3rd Battalion, 133 Field Artillery.
The National Guard said Hernandez, who enlisted in November of 2007, was a citizen soldier who attended school during the week, while reporting for duty with his unit during drill weekends and annual training.
Hernandez was found dead alongside a 43-year-old man.
What the soldier was doing in Jurez remains under investigation.
The National Guard said Thursday that Hernandez was not banned from visiting Jurez, as is the case with soldiers stationed at Fort Bliss, because he was not on active duty.
XHIJ-TV in Jurez reports Hernandez leaves behind two brothers who are also in the military. One brother is stationed in Iraq, the other in Laredo.
