Bio from Website: As a young student in El Paso, my primary language was Spanish. My father was born in Mexico and mother in El Paso. Our household was a humble one with a poverty level income. My mother and father were divorced when I was 5 years old and I was brought up by my grandmother and mother, and lived in a household of 8 in the Second Ward on Fox Drive. We moved to Cedar Grove, a Lower Valley Subdivision and there I attended Cedar Grove Elementary. I graduated from Cedar Grove in 1969 and attended Riverside High School where I graduated in 1973.
As a young adult my mother and grandmother instilled in me the importance of education. I attended El Paso Community College while working full-time and graduated in 1975. In 1975 I volunteered for early enlistment as an Infantryman in the U.S. Army for 4 years. As a Vietnam Era Veteran, I received several medals and decorations. I used my G.I. Bill to fund my way through the remaining 2 years of my undergraduate degree and earned a BA Degree in Economics at the University of Texas at El Paso.
I was the merchandise manager for Penney Company for 8 years. I opened the Penney Store in Alamogordo in 1981 and managed stores in Colorado, California, and El Paso. My second career was that of an executive for Westwood Lighting Company. I was the right hand to the VP of sales and marketing. After working two years for this multinational company, I opened my own business, “Dan Chavez Sales.” Dan Chavez Sales is a Multinational Company dealing with exporting and consulting in home textiles. As President of Dan Chavez sales for 22 years I learned hands-on experience in domestic & international negotiations, regulation, and economics. In order to enhance my business experience, I attended the University of Phoenix in the evening and earned a Masters in Business Administration in Global Management in 2000. I have decreased the size of my business that employed 3 to 5 people at one time, to a home business of estimated sales of 2 million per year.
Most of my time now is devoted to teaching and my family; I am married to Holly Chavez and have 5 daughters, one son, and one grandchild. Three of the girls from a previous marriage Lorelei, Victoria, and Valerie who are all college graduates. Victoria is married to Jason Spencer and they have a baby girl name Kaliska. Sarah, Amy, and Steven are from my second marriage. Sarah is attending Our Lady of the Lake University and EPCC, Amy is a sophomore at Hanks High and Steven is in 7th grade being homeschooled.
I am currently a professor in Economics at The University of Phoenix, and an instructor of Economics at EPCC. I teach because I enjoy giving back to my community. I want to help students that are pursuing an education in business to learn what the business world is really like and to better understand today’s business expectations & opportunities. I truly feel that business people can run the world, and I am anxious to be your new State Senator in District 29. This is where I will work at growing our economy by elevating our level of education and bring jobs to El Paso utilizing not only my business and economic experience, but also making more use of Governor Perry’s job programs, the Texas Enterprise Fund, and the Emerging Technology Fund.
