Family Remembers College Student Killed In Downtown El Paso Canal Car Wreck
Clarissa Dominguez remembers her niece, 21 year old Corina Bejarano, as a fun-loving and friendly young woman. “She was a great person,” said Dominguez, tears streaming down her face.
Corina Bejarano’s family gathered Sunday to remember the late college student. “This wasn’t supposed to happen. You think, oh, this will never happen to our family,” said Dominguez.
Bejarano died in a car wreck late Friday night after the car she was driving crashed into the Franklin Canal in downtown El Paso.
Traffic investigators say Bejarano was speeding eastbound on the Border Highway at around 1:30 a.m. Saturday when she missed a curve near Park Street, ran off the road and went up an embankment. That’s when her 2008 Pontiac Solstice flew over two sets of railroad tracks and crash landed into the water.
Bejarano’s car was pulled out of the canal by El Paso Fire Department’s Water Rescue Team. The young woman’s body had been trapped inside.
Bejarano was a Socorro High School graduate studying psychology in college. Her aunt described her as a “happy spirit” with a tough, sporty girl edge. “She was very strong. She loved football, she loved the (Dallas) Cowboys. She loved playing sports,” said Dominguez. “She always made us laugh.”
