City’s Battle Over Same-Sex Benefits Gains National Attention

The Wall Street Journal has written a piece on the battle over the city of El Paso granting health-care benefits to same-sex partners of city-government employees.

El Pasoans for Traditional Family Values, a group led by Pastor Tom Brown, was able to put an initiative on the Nov. 2 ballot that voters approved which took away the health insurance of gay and unmarried partners of city employees.

But the city’s interpretation of the new ordinance means health insurance of more than 200 unintended people, such as foster children, spouses of deceased city employees and other city employees could be taken away.

In the Wall Street Journal article Brown said, “I’m feeling a call from God to get more involved in our government.”
