Neighbors Speak Out After Deadly Northeast Shooting
A deadly shooting in a Northeast El Paso neighborhood left families shocked and shaken Friday evening. An 18-year-old man was shot dead on the 5700 block of Tropicana Avenue at about 6:30 p.m.
Residents did not want to speak with ABC-7 on camera, but said it was a scary moment. “I kind of just stood there like, Oh my God,” said one mother who wished to remain anonymous. “I didn’t really know what to do and that’s when I just ran in the house and told my husband, ‘There are so many cops up the street! Call my son, call my son, call my son!'”
Her son was at a friend’s home nearby. Nobody besides the shooting victim was injured Friday evening, though one teenager told us it was a difficult scene to witness. “I was shocked when I saw it, I was like ‘Wow, honestly?'” he said. “There was just blood everywhere. You couldn’t recognize him.”
As of Saturday evening, the victim has not been identified. According to police, shots were fired in and near a parked vehicle after the gunman and the victim got into a verbal argument. Crimes Against Persons and the police gang unit were on the scene investigating Friday night, though they have not said if the shooting was indeed gang related.
The suspects are still on the loose. Police are asking anyone with helpful information to come forward by calling the department at 915-832-4400.
Meanwhile, families living on Tropicana told ABC-7 they’ll be more cautious with their loved ones from now on. “It makes me kind of nervous,” said one mother. “(The shooting) happened around the block and that’s where the kids play.”
