Phone, ‘Net Services to Southern New Mexico Restored After Outage
911 lines, telephone and internet service are back online in Southern New Mexico, after a massive outage Tuesday night.
A third-party crew accidentally cut two Qwest Communications cables in Socorro and Tijeras, knocking out service for thousands of New Mexicans. The outage mostly affected Sprint and Nextel customers in Dona Ana County, the City of Las Cruces, Hatch, Chaparral and Sunland Park.
The outage was a major problem with emergency dispatch service. Numerous calls in Las Cruces couldn’t get through, and the emergency backup system also went down. The lines were cut around 4:00 pm. They were repaired shortly before 8:00 pm.
