UM Football Player’s Mother Killed In Haines City Crash

The mother of a University of Miami football player was killed and two other family members were hospitalized after a two-vehicle accident Monday morning in Haines City, The Ledger newspaper reported.

Elgusta James, 47, of 709 N. Sixth St. in Haines City, was thrown from a sports utility vehicle and died at the scene of the accident that happened about 10:30 a.m. at Patterson Road and North 10th Street, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said.

James is the mother of Hurricanes’ sophomore running back Mike James, who was a football standout at Ridge Community High School in Haines City.

Her daughter, Jasmine James Ansley, 25, was driving a Ford Explorer north on 10th Street when the SUV was struck by a 1990 Toyota Corolla driven by Paul Lopez, Jr., 60, of Haines City, reports said. Lopez had been driving east on Patterson Road.
