Back To School For Area Students

After a six day weekend, many area students are heading back to school with something extra in their backpacks.

Their own drinking water.

The boil alert for the city won’t be lifted until Wednesday at noon at the earliest, so students have been asked by school officials to bring their own drinking water.

Even though students had to lug around an extra jug of water, there weren’t too many complaints.

“I have to get out of the classroom to get water and things like that so it’s kind of a hassle, but otherwise that it’s fine,” said Chapin High School junior Jacob Vallejo.

Chapin principal Karla Gonzales thanked the custodial staff and parents for making the transition back to school an easy one. Gonzales added that missing more days would have made things more difficult.

“We’ve been out for four days. We don’t want any more days due to illness or not being careful at this point until it’s completely clear,” said Gonzales. “The kids have done a good job at bringing the water.”

As for the four missed days, the state requires two of them to be made up either during scheduled school holidays or at the end of the year. The school has not yet decided which option will be best.

For the other two days, school district officials said they will have to file a waiver to get them dismissed.
