Investigators Say Suspect Bragged About Attacking Las Cruces Football Player
The man accused of brutally beating Onate High School football player Jerry Zamarripa allegedly struck him with a golf club so hard, it broke in half — then bragged about the attack, according to court documents.
A court document describing disturbing new details was obtained by the ABC-7 New Mexico Mobile Newsroom Monday, detailing what investigators learned happened to Jerry Zamarripa, who died this past weekend after being taken off life-support.
Now in custody and charged with aggravated assault, Andrew Martinez, 24, could face anything from first degree murder to a fourth degree felony.
According to the statement of facts, a witness told investigators Martinez was part of a group that crashed an underage drinking party on Tammy Lane on February 20.
At some point, Martinez slipped and fell into a pool.
When he got out, the witness told investigators Martinez was angry and pulled out a knife with a seven-inch blade, according to the document.
Martinez has acknowledged he stabbed someone, the document states, but it is still unclear if that person was Anthony Sena, the other person injured at the party.
In the statement of facts, investigators learned Martinez then used a metal golf club to hit someone on the forehead. That is when Martinez then moved his attention to Zamarripa.
Martinez told investigators, ?He struck Jerry once on the torso, which caused Jerry to fall to the ground, and proceeded to strike Jerry once again on the head.”
While Zamarripa lay bleeding on the ground, a witness told investigators Martinez bragged about hitting Zamarripa so hard, the head of the golf club broke off.
But the 24-year-old later expressed remorse when he told investigators, ?His heart hurts because someone is on life support as a result of what happened at the party.?
Witnesses also told investigators Martinez had a gun, and threatened to shoot before he finally got into his car and took off.
Zamarripa died Saturday, nearly one week after he was beaten.
Zamarripa?s viewing is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, March 3 at La Paz ? Graham?s Funeral Home, located 555 West Amador in Las Cruces.
The funeral service is at 10 a.m. Friday, March 4 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral, located at 1240 S. Espina St. in Las Cruces.
