‘Shattered Dreams’ Teaches Students Consequences Of Drinking, Driving
A gruesome and bloody car crash scene unfolded just outside El Dorado High School in far east El Paso on Tuesday.
Bodies lay strewn across the dirt and students watched paramedics attempt to revive the victims.
It was part of the Shattered Dreams program the school participated in to raise awareness about the devastation underage drinking and driving can do.
El Dorado seniors took part in the program, starting at 8:30 a.m. with a Living Dead event where once every fifteen minutes a student left the classroom to represent the statistic of one death every fifteen minutes due to alcohol-related crashes.
After the Living Dead event, students visited a realistic mock crash site outside the school, which depicted what happens in an alcohol-related crash.
The students who played victims were transported to local hospitals. One student, who was the most injured in the mock crash, was airlifted by helicopter to University Medical Center.
The students watched as the driver of the vehicle was arrested for DWI by the El Paso Police Department. That student was taken through the booking process as well as taken to the county jail.
On Wednesday, students will continue the program with a morning assembly with a procession of caskets from the victims of the crash as well as hear from special speakers.
Shattered Dreams aims to help save lives of students and young people by educating them on the consequences of drunken driving.
