Update: El Paso Police ID Man Killed During Early Morning Wreck
Update: El Paso Police have identified the driver who was killed in Monday’s early morning accident on Loop 375 at Montana near the Spur 601 exit as Gabriel Lopez, 38 years old, 1100 block Prescott.
According to El Paso Police’s Special Traffic Investigation’s unit, Lopez was driving a 2000 Ford Mustang north on Loop 375 approaching the Spur 601 Exit at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the Mustang as he approached a curve in the roadway. The vehicle collided with the left center barrier and slid across the two lanes of traffic to the right and onto the dirt shoulder.
The vehicle continued and collided with another metal barrier at the Spur 601 Exit, causing the vehicle to roll over and coming to rest in the traffic lanes.
Police officials said Lopez was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. There were no other vehicles or persons involved in the crash.
Speed, alcohol, and failure to wear a seat belt are all believed to be factors in this collision, according to police.
This is the 20th traffic collision of 2011 compared to 20 at this same time in 2010. a seatbelt. He died on the scene.
A similar wreck this same stretch of roadway happened just last week. Last Monday, 30-year-old Gabriel Vasquez died after he crashed near the Spur 601 exit. Police tell ABC-7 in both wrecks, the driver was speeding. EPPD has notified the Texas Department of Transportation about this wreck as well.
They are awaiting toxicology results to determine if alcohol also contributed.
