Army Designates Fort Bliss A ‘Net Zero’ Pilot Project Site

Congressman Silvestre Reyes (D-TX), released the following statement today on the Army’s designation of Fort Bliss as one of two locations Army-wide for the “Net Zero” Pilot Project for energy, water, and waste:

“Today, the Army has selected Fort Bliss as one of only two installations to launch the cutting-edge “Net Zero” Pilot Project to lead the Army’s energy, water, and waste conservation efforts. This is certainly outstanding news and confirms the Army’s commitment to Fort Bliss as one of the nation’s premier military installations in the nation.

“I am pleased that the Army has recognized the ongoing work at Fort Bliss and in El Paso to conserve resources while achieving the Army’s mission to train soldiers for combat and support military families. As one of two installations selected Army-wide, Fort Bliss remains the top post for the development and testing of new energy, water, and waste technologies.

“As the site of the first in-land desalination plant in the nation, Fort Bliss and its partner, El Paso Water Utilities, have been at the forefront of the military’s efforts on water sustainability. Combined with conservation and other efforts, Fort Bliss is clearly on the cutting edge when it comes to preserving water resources. These initiatives proved invaluable during the 2005 BRAC process and remain critical to the future of the post and our region.

“Fort Bliss has also taken the lead on energy sustainability, and today’s designation is confirmation of those efforts. From former-Commanding General Howard Bromberg to current Fort Bliss leader Dana Pittard and many others, I have had outstanding partners as we continue to work to achieve energy security by investing in alternative and renewable energy technologies. Fort Bliss has both the access to natural resources and a strong commitment to use all available assets to address our nation’s energy challenges.”
