EPPD: Man Crashes Into Off-Duty Officer, Arrested For Felony DWI

An off-duty El Paso police officer was involved in a crash Saturday afternoon when the vehicle he was driving was hit by a 2002 GMC truck, according to police investigators.

The collision happened around 4 p.m. in the 300 block of Bartlett Drive in west El Paso, said investigators.

Police said the driver of the truck, identified as Rafael Camarena, 57, drove off after the crash.

Investigators said the officer was able to provide responding on-duty officers with a description of the truck and its direction of travel.

Camarena was later found in the 700 block of Thorn Avenue, according to police.

Investigators said Camarena showed signs of intoxication and had 3 prior convictions for Driving While Intoxicated.

After failing a field sobriety test, police said Camarena was arrested and booked into the El Paso County jail on a charge of Driving While Intoxicated with 3 or More Convictions, a felony.

His bond was set at $5000.00.

No injuries were reported in the crash.
