UPDATE: New Information Surfaces On The Horizon City Teen Accused Of Faking Cancer

New developments have surfaced on the Horizon City teenager who is accused of faking a terminal illness to get more than $10,000 in donations to her own charity foundation, called “Achieve The Dream.”

Due to patient confidentiality laws, ABC-7 was unable to get confirmation from Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., where Gomez claimed to be receiving treatment.

But, in an interview in the El Paso Times back in March, Angie Gomez claimed the Make-A-Wish foundation had offered her a wish.

“So I asked them to pay for my college. They told me to pick something else. I said, ‘No, I want my college.’ They must have thought I was crazy. I bet they still think I’m crazy,” Gomez said in the El Paso Times article.

ABC-7 contacted Brent Goodrich, the Media Relations Manager for the Make-A-Wish foundation who said they had no record of Gomez’s involvement with the foundation. He also said other kids who used their wish for college tuition were given aid.

Horizon City Police detectives are staying tight-lipped on the investigation, and will not confirm or deny the validity of the allegations made on Gomez.

Detectives did said they have tracked donations to the foundation to a bank account in the name of the charity.

Details on how the funds were being used have not been released.

Horizon City’s police department issued a news release with the following information:

“On June 02, 2011 the Horizon City Police Department received information regarding a possible Theft by Deception. The complaint alleges approximately six months ago Ruth Angelica “Angie” Gomez, 18 years of age of Horizon City, TX, started the “Achieve the Dream” foundation and conducted many fundraisers in El Paso area. It is alleged that Ms. Gomez stated that she had been diagnosed with Leukemia as a young child and still battles the disease today although allegedly Ms. Gomez does not have, nor has ever had leukemia or any form of cancer.”

Police have not revealed how they were tipped off that Gomez may have been living a lie through her foundation.

ABC-7 tried contacting all the phone numbers associated with the “Achieve the Dream” foundation but had no luck contacting Angie Gomez to get her side of the story.

After news of the investigation broke, some donors and supporters came forward with their disappointment.

“I am so disgusted by the whole situation,” said Melissa Gracey, co-owner of Sho Offz gym in East El Paso.

Gracey and her husband organized fundraisers and even designed a logo for Gomez’s foundation.

“We spent a lot of time, money and effort (in Gomez’s organization),” she said. “I am so puzzled. I don’t know what to believe anymore.”

Gracey said the 18-year-old went to great lengths to show she was in treatment. “I would drop her off and pick her up from the hospital,” said Gracey. “Who would lie about something like that?” she asked.

It wasn’t just Gracey’s gym– several other local schools and businesses organized fundraisers for Achieve the Dream. Gomez even spoke at several events, including a graduation.

Gomez’s fiance, Freddy Alcantar, told ABC-7 that Gomez admitted to fabricating her medical history shortly after news of the investigation broke.

“I tried asking her a couple of (follow-up) questions, but she said she couldn’t tell me. She said she was better off staying quiet. I never doubted her health because it was a sensitive subject,” said Alcantar.

Some are wondering how Alcantar could have been so close to Gomez and not suspect something was awry.

“It’s somewhat of a sensitive subject, so you don’t ask,” said Alcantar. “Someone says something like that, you just don’t ask. I think that’s how it got this far in the first place.”

Alcantar attended multiple fundraisers with Gomez for her charity, but claims he had no involvement in the alleged deception.

“I had no idea. You would have thought that somebody like me would have known, but I had no idea,” said Alcantar.

If you or anyone you know donated money to the Achieve the Dream foundation, you’re asked to call Horizon City police at 915-852-1047.
