Elderly Couple Attacked By Bees, Stung 100 Times Each

An elderly couple is in the hospital after being stung by bees more than 100 times, according to San Elizario Fire Department officials.

Batallion Chief Robert Lopez said children were playng by a tree and throwing rocks at a beehive at about 12:30 Sunday afternoon, at the San Elceario Catholic Church in San Elizario.

Lopez said the elderly couple stopped by to visit the church and parked their vehicle under the tree. As the couple got off their car, an angry swarm of bees attacked them, said Lopez. The man is 86 years old. The woman is 79 years old.

A man who was standing nearby tried to shield the elderly woman with his body and brought the couple inside the church.

“They had them inside the hall here, in the kitchen. They were trying to cool them down and keep them at ease because there was a lot of yelling going on”, said Lopez.

The couple has not been identified and the man who took them inside the church said the couple is not from San Elizario.

A woman in her 20s and two young children were also stung, but not as critically, said Lopez. All of them were taken to the hospital.
