Car Goes Airborne On I-10, Man Killed

A man is dead after an early morning wreck on Interstate 10, according to El Paso Police. Investigators said James Causey, 28, was driving westbound on I-10 near the Raynolds exit at about 1:40 Sunday morning when he lost control of the 1997 green Honda Accord he was driving. Police said Causey is from the 300 block of Windrose in El Paso.

According to Police spokesman Darrel Petry, Causey was driving at a ‘high rate of speed’ , when he lost control and hit a guardrail. The car then went ‘airborne’, landed again on the westbound lanes and collided with a concrete pillar on the Raynolds street overpass.

Causey died on the scene, according to police investigators. He was the only person in the car and was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the wreck. Special Traffic Investigators consider speed and alcohol to be contributing factors in this fatal collision and they are still investigating the wreck.

This is the 35th traffic related fatality of 2011 compared to 33 in 2010. The crash is also the third fatal wreck over the weekend. On Saturday, two teenage brothers died in a crash, also on I-10.
