Consider Pets during Fourth of July Celebrations

Animals still a concern despite area-wide fireworks ban

El Paso, Texas – Every year the Animal Service Program is inundated with calls and the shelter is filled with pets as a result of Fourth of July celebrations. Many pets are sensitive to loud noises and will often become frightened by the sights and sounds of fireworks. They will sometimes even escape from backyards and run away. This year, despite the ban on fireworks, local officials are urging pet owners to plan ahead to prevent animals from ending up lost or at the Animal Services shelter.

“Whether it is a result of fireworks being used illegally, or the result of professional exhibits, there will probably be enough activity this Fourth of July to create an increase in lost pets,” said Eduardo De Castro, Health Department Deputy Director for Animal Services. “We are hoping that residents will listen to the advice in order to prevent losing their pets.”

The following are some important tips for pet owners during the Fourth of July holiday:

Keep pets inside your home during Fourth of July celebrations. Turn on a television or radio to help muffle the sounds of fireworks. If you cannot keep your pet indoors, make sure they are supervised and provide extra security outside so that they cannot escape. Do not take pets to firework displays. Make sure your pets are wearing I.D. tags and that they have a microchip so that if they do become lost, they can be quickly identified. If your pet is seriously distressed by loud noises, consult with a veterinarian for suggestions and calming medications. If you do have a missing pet, you can contact Animal Services by calling (915) 842-1000 or by visiting us during normal business hours at 5001 Fred Wilson Rd. (across from the Fort Bliss Cemetery)

Please note that Animal Services kennels and offices will be closed on Monday, July 4th but will open on Tuesday, July 5th at 10:30 a.m.
