Toll Lane Construction Begins Today
Starting Monday, crews with the Texas Department of Transportation are set to detour traffic while they begin construction on two express toll lanes on Loop 375.
The lanes will run for a nine-mile stretch of the Loop from Zaragoza Rd. to U.S. 54.
State Rep. Joe Pickett, D-El Paso, told ABC-7 the construction will take place on the inside lanes, which is currently a large shoulder. Pickett also told ABC-7 there won’t be barriers separating the toll lanes from the remaining free lanes.
“They’re going to be signed,” Pickett explained. “They’ll be directional so that the people who commute in the morning and evenings can get in those inside lanes and pay a 90-cent toll and hopefully get to and from work a little bit easier.”
Pickett also said there was a stipulation in creating the first toll lanes in El Paso: the tolls must generate revenue.
“If this project does not make money, within three years it converts to a total free lane, three lanes in each direction,” said Pickett.
The $55 million project will be taken on by the Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority and will be completed in an estimated two years.
