Woman Now Charged With Capital Murder In Toddler’s Death
El Paso sheriff’s officials said the woman accused of injuring a toddler is now facing a capital murder charge in the child’s death.
Investigators said Maria Estrella Hernandez fatally injured 22-month-old Joanna Castillo on Saturday, July 16.
Sheriff’s officials said Hernandez, who is the girlfriend of child’s father, was looking after the toddler.
She was initially arrested Tuesday and charged with injury to a child.
Joanna died Thursday, according to officials.
Authorities said Hernandez first told investigators the toddler suddenly began to convulse, but later changed her story, saying Joanna had fallen down the stairs.
Hernandez remained at the El Paso County Jail Sunday under a $500,000 bond for the capital murder charge.
