Mexican Officials Say Cities Will Get Anti-Crime Grants
Most Mexican cities that saw their federal anti-crime grants suspended earlier this week will qualify for the money once they show they are trying to fulfill requirements for better police salaries and training.
National Public Safety System secretary Juan Miguel Alcantara says the violent city of Juarez has already submitted paperwork that could lead to its reinstatement.
It is one of 162 cities suspended from grants worth about $102 million.
Alcantara said Tuesday the program allows the municipalities to work with administrators and show what steps they are taking to comply and he expects all but a few to qualify.
The program gives money three times a year to the areas with the most kidnappings and murders.
