State Launches ‘Housing4TexasHeroes’ To Assist Veterans

Texas veterans will soon get some help for their housing needs.

Nearly $3 million will be made available through the “Housing4TexasHeroes” program.

“In my eyes, you all are heroes, every one of you. Thank you. I was never called into battle, but I know some of the names on the wall including some of those who attended my beloved Texas A&M,” Texas Gov. Rick Perry said.

Perry, who is seeking the Republican nomination to run for president, praised veterans for their service to the country while addressing the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention on Monday in San Antonio.

Housing4TexasHeroes funds will be used to remodel homes to accommodate physical needs of injured vets. Grants will be made available through the Texas Veterans Commission Fund for Veterans’ Assistance to organizations that provide housing to veterans and their families. Housing4TexasHeroes will allocate the funds evenly into two program categories: temporary housing and permanent housing.

According to a news release, organizations that provide temporary housing to low income or homeless veterans, or to the dependents of veterans who are undergoing long term treatment at a medical facility in Texas, may qualify for grant funds in the temporary housing category. Organizations that provide permanent housing, such as new home construction or housing modification for Veterans requiring such modifications due to a physical disability or injury, may qualify for funds in the permanent housing category.

“The freedoms we all enjoy are the direct result of the service and sacrifice of our veterans, who valued their country and their communities, above themselves,” Gov. Perry said in a news release. “Housing4TexasHeroes will help ensure veterans and their families have adequate housing as they ease back into civilian life and enjoy the blessings of liberty they have earned with their own valor and sacrifice.”

Applications will be accepted through Sept. 16. For information, visit tvc.state.tx.us/about/current-grant-process-and-form.
